bio

Among many other very nice things, the publication of Bitch gave me some time to write Sweet Ruin, a novel about love and loss and marriage and adultery to be published by Atria/Simon & Schuster in June, 2006. While awaiting its release, I've taught a non-fiction writing class as The New School, in New York; continued to write for magazines and newspapers; spoken nationally about the trials and joys of being a contemporary working mother; and watched my kids grow from sweet babbling babies into clever, beautiful, self-possessed, very funny little people.

In the fall of 2004, at the invitation of the Styles editor of The New York Times, Dan and I created the "Modern Love" column in Sunday Styles. Dan soon took over the column, while I revised my novel and ventured into travel writing so our family could venture beyond our small town. In the meantime, we've watched the genre of "literary anthologies" take off (see "The Anthology Orgy"), acquired a mutt from Puerto Rico named Rosalita, and continued to live busily and happily in Northampton. At the time of this writing, I await that miraculous clearing of my schedule that will allow me to start another novel.
